The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities (MTWA) and the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) formalized a partnership to promote chimpanzee conservation, habitat protection, and sustainable tourism through a Memorandum of Understanding.
The partnership builds on MTWA’s previous efforts to upgrade protected areas, develop the National Chimpanzee Conservation Strategy, and collaborate with stakeholders to fundraise for the strategy, which raised 1.6185 trillion Ugandan Shillings from donors and diplomats.
The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in areas such as chimpanzee conservation, ecosystem management, environmental education, tourism development, and resource mobilization. The partnership recognizes the vital ecological and economic roles that chimpanzees play, which are threatened by human activities such as habitat destruction and unsustainable harvesting.
The Ministry and the Chimpanzee Trust commit to working together to promote wildlife conservation and tourism development in Uganda, enhancing species welfare and conservation.
