Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Akagera National Park

5 days Rwanda gorilla & wildlife, Upon your early arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your tour leader for a warm welcome to the Land of a Thousand Hills. He will give you insight into what you have to expect on this 5 days Rwanda gorilla and wildlife safari. After, connect to Akagera National Park in Eastern Rwanda about 2-3 hours’ drive from Kigali. Check in at safari lodge to relax, dine and spend a night.

Day 2: Game drives and boat cruise in Akagera National Park

Begin your day with an early morning breakfast and later, go explore Akagera National Park on a game drive. In your 4×4 rental car with pop-up, the 2-3 hours of game viewing in this savanna park involves you sighting diverse wildlife including among others the African elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, antelopes, zebras, leopards, lions and birds. Drive back thereafter to have lunch and some relaxation at the lodge.

At 2:00pm, expect to take part in an exciting boat cruise via Lake Ihema. This will reward you with amazing sight of water birds including shoebill stork, papyrus gonoleks, eagles, kingfishers; hippos and crocodiles as they bask along the lake shores. After the 2-3 hours of exploration, get back to the lodge to relax, dine and spend a night.

Day 3: Drive from Akagera to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, check out of your safari lodge ready to get on a road trip to Volcanoes National Park. This is one of the 4 beautiful parks where 1063 mountain gorillas live and only 10 groups have been habituated for gorilla trekking. Arrive early to check in at your preferred gorilla safari lodge for relaxation, dinner and night stay.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

At 7:00am, you will be expected to have reported to Kinigi Visitor Centre after breakfast for briefing by park official. This is for you to learn which dos and don’ts to follow on a trek to see mountain gorillas.

You will be assigned to one of the following habituated gorilla groups; Sabyinyo, Hirwa, Ugenda, Umubano, Amahoro, Kwitonda, Susa B (Karisimbi), Susa A, Bwenge and Agashya family. Each group of 8 visitors shall be accompanied by an experienced park ranger guide and you will be joined by porters carrying your luggage.

The whole trek to view mountain gorillas takes about 2 to 6 hours and this also covers one hour which you will have face to face with these dramatic creatures in the wild and photography. Later, walk back to relax in the lodge and in the evening, you can engage in cultural walk in Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for authentic cultural experiences.

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali

Enjoy your breakfast and after, drive back to Kigali to tour Kigali/Gisozi genocide site, local markets and other historical sites. Later, drive to Kigali Airport to fly back home and this marks the end of your 5 days Rwanda gorilla and wildlife safari.
