THE 2025 RWENZORI MARATHON A CELEBRATION OF TOURISM, ATHLETICS & UNITY:

The 2025 Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon held on August 23rd in Kasese District drew over 3,500 runners from 56 countries, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s sports tourism.

The main 42km race started at the Equator Monument in Kikorongo, within Queen Elizabeth National Park, offering runners a chance to experience some of Africa’s most stunning scenery. Other categories began from Kasese town, energizing the local streets.

The event was attended by notable figures including Kenya’s Deputy Speaker Hon. Gladys Jepkosgei Boss Shollei and Uganda’s Minister Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, among others. It boosted the local economy—hotels were fully booked, restaurants busy, and transport services in high demand—showing its role as an economic catalyst.

Prize money was awarded to top athletes: UGX 10 million for the 42km race winner, UGX 7 million for the 21km, and UGX 5 million for the 10km. The marathon continues to grow in prestige, highlighting Uganda’s potential as a premier sports tourism destination, leveraging its landscapes, passionate communities, and cultural richness. Uganda has once again demonstrated its readiness to host the world and harness tourism, sport, and culture for national development.
