Bwindi is about 4 hours’ drive from Rwanda’s City and over 8 hours’ from Kampala City, making Rwanda an ideal gateway into the endowed gorilla trekking destination in Uganda. Situated in south-western Uganda and extending for over 331 square kilometers, Bwindi is the richest place when it comes to gorilla numbers (almost half the World’s population of mountain gorillas) and highest number of gorilla families to trek, standing at over 20 habituated gorilla families.

Arriving from Rwanda, tourists access Uganda through different border points-Cyanika, Katuna, Mirama and Kagitumba points but for your 2 days Uganda Gorilla Tour from Kigali, you will be using the Cyanika Border crossing over to Kisoro district then finally to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Day 1: Arrival/pick-up and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet our experienced driver/guide who will welcome and brief you on your short tour. You will thereafter start your 4 hours’ journey to Bwindi while relishing the magical views of Rwanda’s numerous rolling hills, the Virunga Volcanoes as well as Uganda’s countryside.

On reaching the Town of Kisoro, continue to the southern sector of Rushaga where your gorilla trekking adventure will take place. Head straight and check-on at the pre-booked safari Lodge where you will freshen-up and later enjoy your sumptuous meal (lunch). If there is time or other prevailing conditions (such as weather) allow, there will be an evening cultural tour.

Dinner and Overnight at:

  • Luxury: Gorilla Safari Lodge.
  • Midrange: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge.
  • Budget: Nshongi Camp or Wagtail Eco Safari Camp.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and return to Kigali

A night in the middle of an African wilderness results into a refreshed morning. Wake up to an early breakfast and with your trekking equipment, gorilla permit and packed lunch transfer to the Rushaga headquarters for briefing. This briefing is on the dos and don’ts of trekking the endangered mountain gorillas and is followed by allocation into groups of 8 persons per gorilla family. Make sure to have hired a porter (although not compulsory) and at 8:00am begin the trek for the allocated gorilla family which will last between 30 minutes and 3 hours depending on your pace of movement and their location.

On finding them, your clock will start ticking and you will be allowed to spend only one hour taking photos and getting amazed by their remarkable behavior. Enjoy your packed lunch and return to the Lodge for check-out and return to Kigali for your return flight (if it was booked for that particular day).

Some of the gorilla trekking guidelines you must follow at all times

  • Maintain a distance of 7 meters when viewing the mountain gorillas.
  • You are allowed to spend only one hour with the gorilla family.
  • Avoid making noise when tracking or when in the presence of the mountain gorillas.
  • Direct eye contact with the mountain gorillas must be avoided.
  • Do not touch the mountain gorillas and even when they come close, kindly move back slowly.
  • A maximum of 8 persons can watch a mountain gorilla family per day.
  • Visitors with flue or cough shouldn’t visit a gorilla family because these primates are vulnerable for most human communicable diseases.
